QIMR Berghofer is a world-leading translational medical research institute focused on improving health by developing new diagnostics, better treatments and prevention strategies, specifically in the areas of Cancer, Infection and Inflammation, Mental Health and Neuroscience, and Population Health. Based in Herston, Brisbane and working in close collaboration with clinicians and other research institutes, QIMR Berghofer is home to more than 600 scientists, students and non-research staff.

The Cancer Drug Mechanisms Laboratory combines expertise in cell biology with understanding of drug mechanisms to treat cancers and other chronic diseases. The group is investigating the molecular mechanisms involved in the progression and metastasis of melanoma, head and neck cancer, as well as cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma. These mechanisms also affect drug resistance of cancers. The group also uses its cell biology knowledge to assist in the development process for novel agents targeting cancer and other chronic disorders.

Role Purpose / Responsibilities:

Applications are invited for a Research Assistant.

The following duties will apply:

  • Perform a range of mouse, cell culture and molecular biology techniques, including RNA/DNA extractions, immunostaining, tissue fixation/sectioning and microscopy;
  • Laboratory management, including ordering and equipment maintenance to optimise project outcomes;
  • Management of mouse colonies, genotyping, and ensuring animal and human ethics regulatory compliance;
  • Process samples, troubleshoot protocols, interpret results and prepare reports (ethics, experimental reports and assist with funding applications);
  • Assist with provision of technical advice and training for students and technical staff on a range of molecular, cell culture and genetic techniques.

About you:

You are required to have:

  • Bachelor of Science with first-class Honours or higher qualification;
  • Experience in cell culture and molecular biology techniques (e.g., western blot, qPCR, cloning, lentivirus preparation, immunostaining etc.);
  • Experience working and handling laboratory mice (e.g. injection, monitoring, dissection, genotyping, IP and oral gavage) and willingness to learn new animal techniques;
  • Enthusiasm for learning, teamwork and problem solving.

It is desirable to have:

  • Experience in flow cytometry;
  • Experience in small animal surgical techniques;
  • Experience in lab management.

Remuneration: Salary range is $74,397 to $95,329 p.a. plus super and salary packaging. This is a full-time appointment for with possibility of extension dependent on funding.
